The dried, mature seeds of the Cuminum cyminum plant. These seeds are elongated, greenish-brown, and possess a strong, earthy, and slightly nutty aroma. They are used primarily as a base spice for “tempering” (tadka) in hot oil to release essential oils before adding other ingredients.
